Newlyn Art Gallery has been shortlisted for 'Best New Building'
by the prestigious Civic Trust Awards.
The awards are designed to
encourage projects that are culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and
make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the
environment.Other buildings featured in the shortlist include the Royal Festival
Hall, London, the National Assembly for Wales and the BBC Broadcasting House
redevelopment.
The gallery's director, James Green, said: "We are
delighted to be shortlisted for this award and to be recognised alongside such
iconic national buildings.
"MUMA, the architects, offered a wonderful solution to capturing the
unique qualities of the landscape and light of the Cornish peninsula and drawing
them into the heart of the gallery.
"They have released the potential of
the beautiful site by engaging the new accommodation with the landscape - from
intimate views within the garden to spectacular panoramic views across Mount's
Bay."
This is one of several nominations and awards for the Newlyn Art
Gallery and The Exchange, Penzance.
Both buildings have been listed in
Channel 4's Top 50 Buildings of the Millennium and The Exchange recently won a
RIBA Town & Country Award and an FX International Design Award.
The
awards event takes place in Newcastle on Wednesday, March 12
