Adventurer Pete Goss is putting the finishing touches to his
unique wooden boat before embarking on a journey from Cornwall to
Australia.
He will sail in the historical wake of a 37ft wooden vessel
called Mystery, which arrived in Australia in March 14, 1855 after an epic
journey from Cornwall.
Mr Goss is building his own boat, Spirit of
Mystery, to shine a light on the bravery of the seven Cornishmen who made the
journey to Melbourne to escape poverty.
In a boatyard in South East Cornwall, Spirit of Mystery has just five
planks left to fit, keeping her well on schedule for a planned June launch. Mr
Goss has sourced a piece of oak from Nelson's Victory, teak from the Cutty Sark
and part of the rigging from SS Great Britain.
He said: "Boats can
develop real character and as Spirit of Mystery takes shape you can feel the
spirit of history and community in her. I am getting more and more excited about
the forthcoming voyage."
The Mystery left Newlyn on November 18, 1854,
and travelled about 11,800 nautical miles in 116 days before arriving in
Melbourne. The project has so far raised £10,000 for Cornwall Playing for
Success, a charity of which Mr Goss is a founding trustee. People can follow its
progress on the Pete Goss blog
