A gemini catamaran fitted out for the developing South West
fishery of ring netting will soon join the Newlyn fleet.
Launched
recently and named Lyonesse, the vessel has been built at H Baumbach & Son
in Hayle for Newlyn skipper Sam Lambourn. It is a single-purpose craft on which
considerable research work took place before building began.
Mr
Lambourn's present boat, Prue Esther II - a fast Lochin 38 - has proved
successful at the ring net sardine fishery for some time, but is now for sale as
his new Gemini catamaran, measuring just under 12m overall length, nears
completion.
Alan Baumbach, boss at the yard, said the Lyonesse was a craft in which
the highest grade components had been used.
"The Lyonesse on launch
weighed 22 tons on the crane (without fuel) so she's a heavily built boat and we
took delivery of only the hull and have carried out the entire build," he
said.
Propelled by Aquadrive five-bladed propellers, the Lyonesse also
has two side thrusters to keep the boat from the net, each neatly moulded to the
starboard side with its aft side thruster mounted in a housing above the rudder.
The side thrusters can be individually controlled from three
positions.
The carrying capacity of the Lyonesse will be far greater than
a monohull alternative.
