THERE WAS A WONDERFUL DAY IN October when the Princess
Royal came to Newlyn to unveil the magnificent bronze statue dedicated to
Cornish Fishermen lost at sea.
A large number of families were introduced to her at
The Mission and she then walked to the site at Tolcarne where all were admiring
the work of sculptor Tom Leaper.
Schoolchildren from the district, Newlyn Male Choir
and a large number of local people and civic leaders welcomed the Princess with
the Penlee lifeboat offshore and a rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose
overhead.
Since that day the old sea wall has been strengthened
and rebuilt, thanks to the efforts of the County and Penwith Councils and
co-operation of the Penzance town council.
It is hoped that woon the area will have been
re-styled, with an outside wall and rails, CCTV lighting and an interior path
around the statue and a sitting area close by.
The statue continues to draw many people to place
flowers and remember those who have lost their lives at sea. The Trustees and
Committee members are grateful for the generous support that has been received.
With thanks to all,
Douglas Williams MBE. Chairman.

On a slightly different tack to the Newlyn memorial we wonder if you can help us to locate another memorial to Cornish fishermen drowned at sea which we are trying to re-locate. The memorial used to be located in the OLD Museum at Looe and was last seen by my wife about 50 years ago. It was a stone tablet, like a small headstone, and contained the names of ancestoral family members all with the surname WARREN and the christian names George John, Archelaus Henry & William Henry. We have aked in Looe and at Truro museum and members of the Cornish Family History Society of which we are members. If any of your contacts have any knowledge of it's current resting place we are only interested to take a photograph of it for my wifes family interests and would be most greatful for information. Best regards - chris
