THOUSANDS of festival-goers expected to swarm to
Newlyn's spectacular fish festival this Bank Holiday Monday are
strongly advised to turn up hungry.
The
committee has been working the best part of the year to lay on a
diverse array of sumptuous seafood and traditional craft and
educational demonstrations and organisers are confident that this
year's festival will be the best yet.
The
family day out has activities and attractions for everyone, including
children's fish cookery workshops, cooking demos from award winning
chefs, gig races, divers' rescue operations, model boats, net mending
and willow pot making, helicopter displays, open fishing vessels, and
an auction and arts and crafts and live music.
Sailor and adventurer Pete Goss is officially opening the festival, and will be unveiling his handcrafted Cornish lugger called Spirit of Mystery.
Pete is following in the footsteps made by seven Cornishmen 150 years ago when they sailed an identical 37ft lugger, called the Mystery, from Cornwall to Australia.
The modern-day adventure , which
launches from Newlyn in October, will be undertaken without an engine
and navigated using the sun and the stars.
Mike
Collier MBE, festival chairman, paid tribute to the festival committee
and the Newlyn Harbour Master, Andrew Munson, and the Harbour
Commissioners "who generously allow us to take over their harbour every
year".
●Newlyn Fish Festival is a fundraising event for the Fishermen's Mission in Newlyn
●
The Mission, which was set up by a Mrs Tonkin who rented a cottage as a
recreation room for fishermen in 1902, has been long associated with
Penlee and Sennen lifeboats, acting as the first port of call for
survivors on their way home
●
Today's Fishermen's Mission has a living memorial room, set up in 1993
by the then superintendent, Len Scott, as "a testimony to those men and
their families who know the price of fish"
●
Panels carry the names of many fishermen lost since 1945; the names of
those who died before this are recorded in a Book of Remembrance
●
Last year the Mission distributed more than £16,500 to fishing families
in financial hardship. During Christmas Mission staff visited the homes
of 136 fishing families and gave presents to 14 children who had either
lost their father or were facing severe financial hardship
