Consultation over controversial pub plan for outside area ends today Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 September 2008

A NEWLYN pub owner's period of consultation concerning her planning application to have the car parking spaces removed from outside the pub ends today.

Debbie Hicks, of the Star Inn, at Newlyn Strand, is applying for permission to stretch the raised pavement across three parking spaces that are situated outside the pub to create a pedestrian area.

The plans also include a stretch of bollards and chains to separate the pedestrian area from the main road.

A Penwith Council planning officer said many of the concerns that have been expressed by residents are not directly related to the application.

"The applicant is not applying to create an outdoor seating area in this application although that can be applied for with an outside seating license later," she said.

The plans have proved controversial with some residents who have written to The Cornishman complaining that if the plans go ahead it would mean drinkers sitting outside the pub which would spoil the character of the area.

Ms Hicks said: "Too many people in the art galleries forget that the character of Newlyn is a working fishing village with working fishermen."

Well Debbie Hicks if the 'character of Newlyn is to be represented by your 'clientele' of drunken yobs which actually have very little or nothing to do with the local fishing industry then I really hope that the plans to extend your premises will not be approved - I’d much rather look at the present car park.
