A MARITIME adventurer is making good progress in his attempt to recreate a legendary voyage to Australia.
Explorer
Pete Goss and his three-man crew set sail from Newlyn on Monday night
on the 36ft wooden Cornish fishing lugger Spirit of Mystery – a replica
of a boat that carried seven Newlyn fishermen to Melbourne in 1854.
Mr
Goss reported "a wild ride" on the first night's sailing but the crew
managed to hold their course and were even accompanied by "a guardian
angel".
After
a year of meticulous preparation the boat left a crowded Newlyn harbour
to travel down the west coast of France. Writing in his online blog, Mr
Goss said: "Rowing her out was amazing and I can't thank the supporters
enough for the send-off – particularly given the weather."
Yesterday was the first full day of a 12,000-mile voyage which is expected to last 120 days.
Describing the crew's progress Mr Goss said: "Last night was a wild
ride with large and very confused seas, driving rain and pitch dark. It
was interesting that through the night we had a dolphin that kept
popping up by the boat – our guardian angel."
Mr Goss is sailing with brother Andy, 14-year-old son Eliot, and brother-in-law Mark Maidment.
