A pair of Penzance daredevils are setting off from Plymouth and driving deep into the African continent in a car that cost them £100.

Neville Pittman and Shelly Pender are seeking sponsors for the 4700 mile fundraising trip for the Newlyn's Fishermen's Mission and Plymouth Hospital's Hyperbaric Centre.

The thrill seekers participants to the Plymouth to Dakar Challenge, will drive across France, through Spain, cross the Gibraltar Straights into Morocco, cross the Western Sahara, through Mauritania and into Mali's capital city, Bamako.

The journey is expected to take three weeks.

"Both of us like a challenge and we're thrilled to be doing something this exciting while helping people out in the process. And yes, we are confident the 16-year-old Vauxhall Frontera is up to the journey," said Neville.

The pair are appealing for old mobile phones and charges, footballs, football kits, stationary and medical supplies to donate for an auction, with all funds raised given to local charities.

Company's offering donations can stick their logo on the side of the car.

"There will be cameras everywhere we go, hopefully we can get some good Cornish sponsors," said Neville.
