Fourteen owners or masters of six Newlyn based trawlers, together with the company W Stevenson and Sons, appeared before Truro Crown Court on Friday to face a total of 140 charges alleging they had submitted inaccurate figures to DEFRA regarding the quantities and species of fish landed during 2002.
All pleaded not guilty and they have been remanded on bail to await a series of trials, probably later this year.
The company was represented by counsel Ian Lawrie.
The individual defendants, represented by counsel Colm Lyons, were:
Jeffery Bullis, 59-year-old owner of the vessel CKS, of Lelant Downs, and master Drew Davies, 37, of North Road, Goldsithney; Doreen Hicks, aged 80, and 51-year-old James Hicks, both of Park Terrace, Newlyn, and Jonathon Hicks, 47, of The Haven, Newlyn, all of the vessel Ben My Chree; Philip Mitchell, 36, master of Carol H, of Trewarveneth Street, Newlyn; Barney Thomas, 53, and Cynthia Thomas, 51, owners of Carol H and Ajax, of Lower Lelant; Donald Turtle, 80, and Joan Turtle, 68, of Boase Street, Newlyn, owners of Ben Loyal, and master John Turtle, 44, of Barton Close, Heamoor; Arthur Williams, 44, and Leonard Williams, 69, both of Bowjey Terrace, Newlyn, owners of Girl Patricia; and Raymond Knight, 59, master of Ajax, of St Anthony Lane, Manaccan.
Counsel Martin Edmunds appeared for the prosecution.
