Aim is to unite the industry Print E-mail

THE Newlyn Fishing Community Interest Company (NFCIC) is a social enterprise with a primary objective to reinvest all surpluses in the business or the community.

The NFCIC shares would be divided into three sectors including the fishermen, processors and the community. This means no one group would be able to become a majority shareholder and all the profits would have to be paid back to the fishing community in Newlyn.

The company's main aim would be to "unite the local fishing industry and the wider community with the marine environment that surrounds them in order to provide the opportunities that will allow a fair financial return to be gained from fishing while safeguarding the ocean habitat".

One of the proposers, Nick Howell, said: "The proposal is one which combines the skills, experience and assets of the port into one vehicle.

"It is about being inclusive, balancing technology with experience, moral sustenance with financial gain and a community with its environment."
