In december 2009 two gig rowers from Penzance, Phil Pring and Ben "Skippy" Cummings, will be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, fulfilling personal ambitions and raising money for the Cornwall Blind Association.

The Atlantic Ocean was first rowed by Norwegians Frank Samuelson and George Harbo in 1896. Their crossing from New York to the Isles of Scilly took 55 days and still stands as a remarkable achievement given the equipment and technology available to them at the time. 

Originally from Teignmouth in Devon, Skippy moved to Falmouth to take up boat building. He has worked on various historic projects including a trip as crew for the making of the film "Shackleton."
More recently he has just finished working on Pete Goss' "Spirit of Mystery" and is currently building his and Phil's boat.

Phil worked as a researcher in the field of human factors before moving back to Cornwall to work on a boat restoration project in 2005. He has recently returned from a year spent in the Cook Islands where he worked as a divemaster and also as a researcher at the Cook Islands Whale Research Centre. Now back in Penzance he works as a builder.
