A NEWLYN firefighter has cycled the length of the country for charity in just under five days.
Nick
Harvey completed the gruelling 859-mile end-to-end ride from Land's End
to John O'Groats more than 17 hours ahead of schedule on Sunday
afternoon.
The
feat – which raised some £1,300 for the Precious Lives Appeal and the
Firefighters' Charity – was all the more remarkable as he was riding a
fixed-wheel bike which has just one gear.
Nick,
who cycled more than 19 hours a day, solo and unsupported throughout
his four days, six hours and 24 minute journey, was greeted by a large
crowd of family, friends and colleagues at Land's End.
"I arrived under blue skies and I wish I had had them the whole way instead of heavy showers and wind in the north," he said.
"Next time around I will be doing it at a much more leisurely pace, sleeping in hotels instead of bivi-bagging in fields."
The
punishing itinerary saw him ride 192 miles on the first day, 182 miles
on the second, followed by 185 miles, 200 miles and a relatively
leisurely 100 miles to wrap up the journey on the final leg.
His progress was closely followed on various forums and websites updated by his wife, Cath, from their home.
