A TWO million pound grant application to redevelop Newlyn fish market has been turned down.
The Marine and Fisheries Agency's grants panel for the European Fisheries Fund said the business case was weak.
Chairman
of the MFA panel, Ray Hedley, said: "It is the MFA's duty to ensure the
taxpayer is getting the best possible value for money.
"The
panel decided that the business case for this application was weak,
most notably because it centred on only one option for development – a
complete new build. It did not examine any options for refurbishment of
the existing buildings."
The Newlyn Harbour Commission has since been invited to make a new bid for consideration by the September MFA grants panel.
Mr Hedley added: "This
is by no means the end of the matter. The good work done in the
preparation of this application will not be wasted.
"The
MFA's economist has offered to brief the applicants in writing and in
person on the best way to produce an outline option appraisal. This can
be a three of four page document which lists the feasible options for
the redevelopment with some costs benefits for each.
"The
MFA fully understands the need to support sustainable and competitive
fisheries and the wider community. We will continue to work with
interested parties to achieve this."
The deadline for the second bid is the end of July.
