A FUNDRAISING art sale for the people of Haiti
takes place at Newlyn Art Gallery on Friday, February 5 from 6 to 9pm
and Saturday, February 6, from 10am to 5pm.
The sale of works donated by members of the NSA (Newlyn Society of Artists) and friends will suit any budget.
There
is also a classy clothes bring and buy, live music on Friday, tasty tea
and cakes and children's activities all day Saturday and a performance
from the 50 Degrees Choir (formerly the Acorn Choir) at noon on
Saturday.
All proceeds go to the Helston-based
charity ShelterBox and Save the Children for its ongoing humanitarian
work with the children of Haiti.
One of those behind the idea is Penzance artist John Keys, who has a personal connection with Haiti.
He was born in Port au Prince in the early '70s after his parents
moved there to work for the Methodist Church. He spent his early
childhood playing among the students of a teacher training college
where his father worked.
John's family have
kept in close contact with their Haitian friends and colleagues and
John returned as an adult to visit his godmother.
He
said: "I was devastated to hear the news of the earthquake and the
ongoing crisis. Fortunately, most of our family friends survived.
"One
did not, my childhood friend, Roland, a father of two, tragically died
in his office building. I felt I had to do something to help this
country that is very dear to my heart.
"The Haitian
people are remarkably resilient and I know that with support they can
rebuild their lives. I urge everyone to come along to our event and
give generously."
