THE NEWLYN art community has turned out in force to
support a major fund-raising event for the victims of the Haiti
earthquake this weekend.
More than 40 artists have
donated work for the "Artists Help Haiti" art sale which takes place at
Newlyn Art Gallery tomorrow from 6pm to 9pm and on Saturday from 10am
to 5pm.
Included in the sale by members of the
Newlyn Society of Artists and friends, are works by Alessandra Ausenda,
Jessica Cooper, Naomi Frears, John Keys, Jesse Leroy Smith, Daphne
McClure, Paul Wadsworth and Emma Wilson
The sale is
the brainchild of John Keys who spent his early childhood in Port au
Prince where his father worked at a teacher training college for the
Methodist Church.
John, who lost a childhood friend
in the earthquake, said he felt he had to do something to help the
country but has been amazed by how the local community has backed the
"Artists Help Haiti" event.
"The Haitian people are resilient and I know that they can rebuild
their lives," he said. "The response from local artists has been great
as has the support of local businesses like Headland Printers, the
Tolcarne Inn and Aunty May's Pasties. There won't just be the paintings
– there'll also be postcards and other items so the sale should suit
any pocket."
The event includes a classy
clothes bring and buy and live music from the Penzance Youth String
Orchestra on Friday, while on Saturday there will be tea and cakes,
children's activities and a performance from the 50 Degrees Choir
(formerly the Acorn Choir) at noon.
All proceeds go to the Helston-based charity ShelterBox and Save the Children.
