This is the fourth and final Newlyn Archive Open Day of the year and will be the most important.It explores the physical landscape of Newlyn and how this has changed as the village grewin response to the needs of the Fishing Industry.
It catalogues the changes that resultedwhen Newlyn was partly demolished as a result of the infamous Newlyn Clearances. Itshows Newlyn before and after these changes and compares Bygone Newlyn with NewlynToday.
The Sense of Place that is so central to the Exhibition is explored through the eyes of thepeople who lived in Newlyn at different times in its history: the fishermen, the fish dealers,the market gardeners, the shopkeepers, the women and the children – and these are realpeople who we can identify in our family histories.It is an interactive exhibition and visitors are encouraged to add to or amend the materialheld in the archive. Other interactive activities include a competition to name the placesthat have featured in important local events.Older members of the community are invited to participate in a recorded groupdiscussion.
There are films and clips about Bygone Newlyn to view.As the 100th anniversary of the Newlyn Male Voice Choir is celebrated this year, they willbe performing for us during the day.Another treat at this Open Day will be to see the work of children from Newlyn Schooland the Trinity Brownie Group who have been working with archive material on projects todo with Bygone Newlyn including one on the Tolcarne Stream.
