cheese-shopTHE CENTRE of Newlyn has got everything – a post office, a greengrocer, a florist, several fish merchants and many other businesses.

But what it lacks is a decent deli, one offering UK cheeses alongside continental meats and tasty range of chutneys and crackers. Here to fill that gap is Newlyn Cheese and Charcuterie, a new venture in New Road which officially opens its doors tomorrow.

Helen Venning decided to set up her own shop to keep the port's centre alive, as well as to share her passion for all things cheesy.

A languages expert and translator by trade, the 37-year-old has sourced cheeses from throughout the country. Most are from Cornwall and Devon, including a tasty blue Brie from Treveador Farm Dairy, near Helston.

Good news for lactose-intolerant shoppers too: there are several goat's and ewe's cheeses on the menu. Sliced cold meats are mainly from Spain and Italy, but chutneys hail from Cornwall, as does the very local Polgoon apple juice.

Helen and her partner Robert Wright are keen to help people find what they like.

"We want it to be as local as possible and we want to have the widest range of UK cheeses in west Cornwall," said Helen, who grew up in Penzance. "We plan to offer the whole service: what the cheese is, how to serve it, what it works with in terms of wine and biscuits."

Helen can't wait to share her passion for savouries as well as supporting other local businesses and encouraging people to think beyond the supermarket shelves.

"Food is a large part of our lives and I just love cheese. I opened the shop because I want to be based in Newlyn where I live – now I can walk to work," she said. "If I bring people here, it helps the shops around me. This is to complement and enhance what is already here."
