A NEWLYN eaterie has been recognised for making a move towards a healthier menu.

The Smugglers on Fore Street has been awarded a prestigious gold level CHEFS Award for its commitment to offering healthy menu options using locally sourced food.

The award means the Smugglers will be able to display the distinctive blue logo which tells customers that it has adopted and maintains a high degree of food safety and standards. It also denotes that the restaurant provides and promotes a selection of local foods, as well as using healthier cooking methods. "As a small 'owner operator' business we try hard to maintain high standards in both quality of produce and food hygiene practices while trying to ensure we give our customers value for money," said Steve and Barbara Turner.

Launched in October 2005, the Cornwall Healthier Eating and Food Safety (CHEFS) Awards are awarded by Cornwall Council's food safety officers working with in partnership with Eatsome/NHS Health Promotion Service, change 4 life and the council's trading standards officers.
