rcs06_008.jpgA REGENERATION programme for Newlyn could finally get off the ground following the long-awaited appointment of a new harbour commission.

The Harbour Revision Order was signed off on Friday, May 23 and 14 new commissioners are due to take to their posts on Monday, May 31.

They are Gilbert McCabe, Edward Bolitho, Andrew Munson, David Stevens, Kevin Bennetts, Mike Collier, David Munday, Juliet Taylor, John Lambourn, Nick Howell, Elizabeth Stevenson, Andrew Bell, Ray Tovey and Glenn Caplin.

The new board is meeting for the first time on June 9, when a chairman and his deputy will be selected.

The meeting is also expected to reach a decision on the much debated plan for a new £5 million fish market.

In February, the European Fisheries Fund awarded a conditional £2.3 million grant towards a new market, auction theatre and offices at the harbour.

One of the newly appointed commissioners, John Lambourn, told The Cornishman: "We have to decide how we are going to work and work within the guidelines of managing trust ports. There are special things in Newlyn that we have to consider and one of them is the fish market because there's a timeline on it.

"The new commission offers a change and we'll work according to the guidelines. We want to be open, give people an opportunity to raise points or even come and hear what goes on at our meetings and see what our programme of work is. It is quite interesting times and we have good reasons to hope that we can start taking things forward."

Of the 14 members, Ray Torvey and Glenn Caplin were appointed by Cornwall Council, Elizabeth Stevenson and Andrew Bell are additional commissioners serving 12 months, Edward Bolitho is a transitional commissioner serving just six months and Andrew Munson represents the harbour management.

Of the remaining eight, three will serve a year, three will serve two years and two a three-year term of office.
