TRANSPARENCY is the key in taking Newlyn forward, the new harbour commission has declared following its first meeting.

The newly selected members met for the first time last Wednesday to discuss some of the pressing issues on the table.

These include the decision on the fish market, which has to be made by mid-August when the match funding offer is due to expire.

"In many ways, the new commission has broken away from tradition in Newlyn because all our future meetings will be held in public," Ray Tovey, the newly elected vice chairman in the absence of chairman Gilbert McCabe, said.

"We are conscious that feelings are running high in Newlyn, but we genuinely believe that transparency, and public participation section, will be widely welcomed and the opportunity respected.

"The main business of the inaugural meeting concerned procedural matters, but we also identified the most pressing issue, the proposal for a new fish market, the information we need to inform our decision, and matters concerning funding if approval to go ahead is given."

The committee is currently identifying groups, organisations and their representatives, with whom they should urgently consult.

They also welcome questions from the public and invite people to attend their meetings which will be held at the centre in Newlyn.

The second meeting took place yesterday morning, June 16.

All approved minutes will be available at the centre and the harbour office and on the new website. In the interim, anyone requiring a set of minutes, once approved, can e-mail the harbourmaster's office, and a copy will be e-mailed in return.
