HOPING to provide cleaner, greener and safer neighbourhoods, a host of volunteers and different agencies were in Penzance on Monday doing their bit for Cornwall's Community Action Week.
From litter-picking to checking vehicle speeds and from offering fire safety advice to checking taxi licences, a whole range of issues were tackled.
The work was co-ordinated by Steve Rowell, Cornwall Council's Community Safety Officer, who said that the day of action started at 8.30am with litter-picking in the Battlefields, Eastern Green and Newlyn areas.

"We not only picked up quite a quantity of litter, we also carried out extensive street cleaning and removed 21 cases of graffiti," he said.
"Environmental teams specialising in dog fouling, car parking enforcement teams and Speedwatch patrols were also in action.
"We stopped 12 cars which were found to be exceeding the speed limit in the Penzance area, giving seven of the drivers verbal warnings and issuing the other five with fixed penalty notices."
Other actions included inspecting 26 taxis and hire vehicles, checking their licences, whether they were safe and whether their drivers were claiming benefits.
The Fire Protection team went to 58 commercial premises, 10 of which will be visited again to check that proper fire safety measures have been adopted.
And 80 private homes were also visited for fire safety checks with 12 of them being fitted with smoke detectors.
Mr Rowell added that although Penzance's Day of Action was on Monday, many of the activities, including efforts would continue.
