THE FISH Festival will go on! That's the message from organisers of Newlyn's popular event which attracts thousands of visitors at the end of August.
The annual Bank Holiday festivities are held to raise funds for the town's Fishermen's Mission and, despite an axe hanging over the Newlyn centre, festival organisers promise next year's celebrations will be bigger and better than ever.
"Obviously the prime function of the Fish Festival is to raise money for the Mission, but secondly it is to showcase the fishing industry and to get Newlyn generally on the map," said Mike Collier, who leads the festival's committee.
"There is no reason at the moment why the festival will not continue to prosper and grow. It has to be something that is dynamic and we have got some ideas for rearranging and improving it for next year.

"We have raised £7,000 so far but we keep back enough to run next year's show. It takes £8,000 to £9,000 for the budget ready to set up; most of the money has to come from upfront," said Mr Collier. "We are very keen to keep things going, and we see no reason why that won't be the case."
