WHY aren't merchants paying up? That's the question being asked at the harbour in Newlyn.
A new charge for buyers introduced in April 2009 has not yet been implemented, a move that could be losing the harbour much-needed income.
The 0.5 per cent fee was brought in at the same time as a hike for fishermen took the rate from 2 per cent to 2.5 per cent.
But commissioners have been quizzed on why those landing fish are now paying extra when merchants are not.
One fisherman, who did not want to be named, told The Cornishman that many want to see those using the facilities to buy fish, as well as sell, handing over part of their profits.
Both Brixham and Plymouth have a 2.5 per cent charge for fishermen landing there, but fees for merchants are 1 per cent.
The commission has agreed to address the issue.
