A CORNER of Newlyn cluttered with fishing detritus has been given a much-needed facelift.

Members of the harbour commission got their hands dirty by clearing rubbish from the net sheds along with harbour staff.

Concerns about rubbish were voiced at the body's public meeting last month. One fisherman questioned why the problem wasn't being tackled, labelling parts of the port "an absolute mess".

Kevin Bennetts, who heads the committee on harbour management and operations, said the commission wants to show that it means business.

"Everybody was unhappy about the amount of junk that had accumulated over the years through nobody's fault," he said.

"We are trying to show people that we are making a start and we shocked a few people who said we wouldn't do it."

After clearing rubbish, including old nets, barrels and boxes, from the storage area at the end of the Strand, it is now hoped the area can be a working space for fishermen.

Mr Bennetts said his committee was hard at work changing the appearance of the area but that they were hampered by a lack of cash.

"We are working on a series of small improvements that are easily affordable and that will build up to really show benefits for the workability of the harbour.

"We have got to live within our means – which are not that good at the moment."
