A NEWLYN woman wants to spread the word on a new therapy being hailed as a success in treating everything from eating disorders to post-traumatic stress issues.
Wendy Lorens, of Kenstella Road, is hoping schools will adopt Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a form of mental programming that has roots in Chinese medicine.
The simple system is said to reduce stress and Wendy, who used to teach massage and aromatherapy, says it can even help young children learn how to tackle their fears.
With its roots in acupuncture and neuro-linguistic programming, fans of EFT say its rapid results can help a vast range of emotional issues.
Wendy said: "It is ideal for children; if they can sort out things when they are little, they don't grow up with something in their subconscious.
"So many people lack in confidence and self-esteem and a lot of that seems to stem from the first few years of life. Children pick up things from parents and teachers, and often take those things on board.
"This is where EFT is so brilliant because it can be applied to anything, whether it is physical, mental, spiritual or emotional."
Described by some as "freedom at your fingertips", at its most basic level EFT involves tapping acupressure points on the body and repeating positive mantras.
Proponents say the technique can be learned rapidly and used to combat stress and tackle negative emotions head-on.
Wendy said: "A lot of people don't talk about their feelings but the best way is to focus on any issue that bothers you and tap on those end points."
EFT, which is even used on babies and animals, is already being taught in schools across America and has been introduced in several schools in the UK.
Wendy, who first learned about the technique seven years ago at a talk in Penzance's St John's Hall, hopes to bring her knowledge to the Penwith area, for both teachers and schoolchildren.
"I can't see anybody that it wouldn't help to some degree," she said. "I can see a time when it will be a normal part of school life.
"It's all about the power of the body and mind working together."
