Dear Editor,
We are very disappointed that the Newlyn Harbour Commission have let go of the grant for Newlyn’s new Fish Market. We feel they were misguided.
Even if the latest version of the building seemed too elaborate for their taste, we do not understand why the grant was not accepted anyway, and the design modified. Money saved by simplifying the building could have been used to equip it.
We resent the dismissive implication that the millions already spent, and seven years of our collective efforts, were in vain. This was not the case: over this period the people of Newlyn have overcome many difficulties and differences to agree on a well-supported plan for our harbour, bring in the new Harbour Commission, and finally win the offer of a grant.
Gilbert McCabe, chairman of the Newlyn Harbour Commission, came to a meeting of VAN (Voice of the Arts in Newlyn) and explained that they still hope to replace the existing building.
