HUNDREDS turned out in the cold to see Newlyn bathed in light for its annual festive illumination.

Famed sea rescue pooch Bilbo was there to lend a paw in the proceedings, switching on the display with the help of owner Steve Jamieson.

Music from the Newlyn Male Choir and the school's children helped Friday's event go with a bang – complete with a stunning firework display.

A children's party at the Fishermen's Mission saw 150 youngsters competing for the attention of Father Christmas earlier in the afternoon. Superintendent Keith Dickson, who held the bash to raise funds for the harbour lights, said it had been a great event which had seen Santa empty his sack of presents.

Saint Nick then headed on to St Just to visit youngsters there on Saturday, following the town's own lights switch-on which also took place on Friday night.

There was a Christmas grotto in the old town hall and a special Christmas sale, with mulled wine and mince pies.
