NEWLYN Male Choir is busy planning its 90th anniversary programme.
The choir first sang formally in March 1921 after a group of men put on a benefit concert in the previous year for the widow of a quarry worker killed in an accident.
From this kindly action grew a choir which has won many competitions and raised thousands of pounds for charity.
The choir's spokesman, Les Gillard, told The Cornishman: "Our choir is proud of the quality of its singing and the position it holds in the community of Newlyn.
"In 2011 the choir hopes to mark this important year with special concerts. It will also be seeking a replacement musical director as the popular John Philpotts is retiring.
"There will be a recruitment drive for new members because, as with all choirs, we depend on a sizeable intake of younger men to take over as our older singers retire."
Drop in any Monday evening at The Centre, Newlyn to hear the choir rehearsing.
