THE OWNERS of a small boat that sank in Newlyn harbour have had to foot the bill for salvaging the vessel.
The six-metre craft sunk at its berth on the port's pontoon on Boxing Day.
With both its owners out of the county, harbour staff had to raise it to the surface, as well as rescuing the nets and other gear left floating in the harbour. Because the boat was not insured, those responsible for it have had to pay for its rescue, which is expected to cost up to £1,000.
"We had the job of salvaging it with all the costs involved charged to the owners," said harbour master Andrew Munson. "Now all vessels must have a minimum of third party cover."
