HAVE YOU got any memories, however distant, involving Newlyn Art Gallery?

Staff at the gallery want to hear from you as part of a new look at the works of its founder John Passmore Edwards.

Visitors to the New Road art space are being asked to contribute to an exhibition on the Cornish philanthropist, born in 1823, who died in 1911.

To mark the centenary of his death, Newlyn Art Gallery – just one of the 70 public buildings he built – is putting together a special display in the studio, the light gallery space at the top of the building. The exhibition will cover the many changes to the gallery since it was built in 1895 and its pivotal role in the artistic community, as well as written testimonies from visitors on their memories of the building.

Its most recent of six incarnations saw the current extension open in 2007. Before that, a major refurbishment was completed in 1994, and earlier there were changes made to the curator's flat in the 1970s.

It's hoped the result will be a living oral and written archive about how the gallery has evolved – and how the community of Newlyn and Penzance has evolved with it.

The centennial exhibition opens on January 29 and will run until May 2. After that, it will be incorporated into the West Cornwall Art Archive.

Exhibitions manager Blair Todd is also keen for any photos or postcards of the gallery, dating back over the last 116 years.

If you've got some images to share, visit the gallery or call 01736 363715.
