JANUARY has been a bumper month for many fishermen in Newlyn with fish worth some £1.5million landed in the port.

Though the whopping total doesn't quite make the record books, the news is bound to be well received after what is usually a squally, blustery month.

The beam trawler fleet's haul of cuttlefish, known locally as 'black gold', not long after new year helped boost the coffers.

More than three-quarters of the total was earned by trawlers, including the Cornishman, skippered by Peter Elsworth, whose catch of 440 boxes earned £52,802 at auction at the start of the month.

On the preceding two days two other beamers, also owned by W Stevenson and Sons, landed catches that smashed the record of £50,458 set in January 2009 by Billy Worth and the crew of St Georges.

Harbour master Andrew Munson said January saw an unusual combination of the right winds and sea conditions, and the total, though not a record, was a "most welcome" contribution to port revenues.
