NEWLYN'S last fish and chip shop is up for grabs.
The family-owned business at the junction of The Strand and Chywoone Hill, which is run by David Jewell, is going up for auction. The chance to own the popular takeaway outlet will be available to the highest bidder when it goes under the hammer on Wednesday.
The well-known building, which also includes rooms upstairs, has a starting price of £100,000 and is described as "an interesting, largely commercial investment, comprising a prominently located two-storey premises".
Miller Countrywide, which is arranging viewings before the auction of the property at Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth, says it has "clear potential" for offering additional food for sale, as well as for developing residential accommodation on the first floor.
A page for the takeaway on the social networking site facebook has more than 320 members, many of whom have posted fond memories of the iconic fried food venue.
"Six years ago I had the seafood platter, it impressed me so much that I still remember it," wrote Michael Ronhof.
Donna Watts was also impressed: "Just had the family meal deal and I would recommend it to everyone – delicious."
Juliet Hooper wrote: "I remember Len Jewell serving me chips and batter bits in a cone after I'd been to Brownies on a Friday night. I was 9 – I'm 36 now."
