ANYONE gazing out to sea last Wednesday might have thought they had stepped back in time.

The Matthew, a unique replica of a medieval merchant ship, sailed into Mount's Bay before mooring in Newlyn for the night as she made her way from her home port of Bristol to Fowey. As our picture shows, she managed to catch the right winds as she took a trip around St Michael's Mount.

The ship is modelled on the original Matthew, which John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland 500 years ago. The ship, which had a TV crew from the BBC filming aboard, will be back in Mount's Bay at the end of April before heading to the Scilly Isles for the World Pilot Gig Championships and then taking in the Golowan festivities. Skipper Rob Salvidge told The Cornishman he was looking forward to spending more time in the bay in the coming months.

"We'll be in Cornwall a lot these next few months," he said. "It's wonderful to be bringing such an amazing ship to beautiful west Cornwall."
