THE CORNISH lugger Ripple will be among the historic ships on display in Newlyn this weekend.

She will be joining fellow luggers the Happy Return and Barnabas for a new event which kicks off in the port on Saturday. Painting on the Pier, which marks the start of British Tourism Week, is the only one of its kind in Cornwall to garner the support of National Historic Ships.

Visitors and residents alike are invited to head to Newlyn's old quay to check out the scenic ships and the local artists capturing them on canvas between 10am and 5pm.

The 14th-century pier will be whisked back in time, with old boats getting painted ready for the season while the Newlyn Archive hosts a display in the old fishermen's rest on the quay. There will be other activities taking place to entertain all ages, and hungry historic boat enthusiasts can enjoy a plate of paella from a stall by the sea.
Stay one step ahead of the weather

John Lambourn, owner of the Ripple, is organising the fun day out which he said was a great way to celebrate Cornwall's heritage.

"Our maritime heritage is rich and fascinating, cherished by many as they trace their family roots back to some maritime connection, and so deserving for preservation." he said. "We are extremely lucky too to have some restored luggers present on the day to show what it was like.

"I hope everyone who comes to see the Old Quay, its boats and its artists will enjoy this bit of real Cornwall and take away a sketch or photograph they have produced for themselves."
