A DELEGATION of West African fishermen will be in Newlyn on Friday to meet their Cornish counterparts.

A trio of inshore fishermen from Cape Verde, Mauritania and Senegal, will be visiting the port as part of the European-wide African Voices Tour, organised by Greenpeace.

They hope to share their insight into the effect large European vessels are having on marine life in their waters at a meeting for the industry in the Fishermen's Mission from midday. In a statement, the charity said that despite the geographical distance, small-scale fishermen in the UK and in West Africa have a lot in common. "Both sectors face similar challenges and problems under the Common Fisheries Policy, particularly in respect of competition from large-scale industrial fleets."
