PROPOSED marine conservation zones have moved a step closer to becoming a reality since the body behind the plans struck a deal with harbour masters in Mount's Bay.

High-level talks had been under way debating activities to be restricted within the areas in the Bay, off St Ives and at Land's End, which are designed to protect precious underwater habitats.

Andrew Munson, harbour master at Newlyn, had voiced concerns that anchoring and dredging may be banned when the zones are introduced.

But he said recent discussions with officials overseeing the project had been positive.

"Together with Captain Andy Brigden, Cornwall Council's Maritime Officer, we have been having further consultations with Finding Sanctuary and now feel that a compromise has been arrived at," said Mr Munson.

"Vessels will still continue to be able to anchor in their normal anchorage positions.

"And more importantly the two ports can keep their current designated dumping areas for dredged material."
