A new project designed to link children to one of Cornwall's best-known industries and give them an insight into their cultural heritage has been launched.

Net to Plate aims to give schools in the county the opportunity to put their pupils at the heart of the fishing industry with special visits to the port of Newlyn.

Sarah Crosbie, manager of project organisers Seafood Cornwall Training, said the youngsters would learn a lot about a range of subjects.

"Bringing children to Newlyn from Cornish schools means they can see, feel and breathe the fish and fishing industry, a key part of Cornwall's heritage and economic future," she said,

"We adapt each visit to suit the schools' needs and if past visits are anything to go by, it's something the children won't ever forget."

The project, which is supported by seafood supplier Falfish, will begin with a visit by children from Launceston to Newlyn.

Ms Crosbie said there was still funding available for four more schools and urged any that are interested to sign up as soon as possible.

The children will meet fishermen and learn about the different types of fishing boats tied to the harbour quay as well as the fish they catch.
