A MEETING of Newlyn's troubled harbour commission is due to take place on Wednesday.

It will be the first public session the board has held since a stormy June meeting followed immediately on the heels of a controversial secret ballot on May 31 on whether to evict three commissioners from their posts.

A public session due to take place on July 6 was cancelled at the last minute "to allow further advice to be received by the Commission" and has not been rescheduled.

But, as The Cornishman went to press, the commission had not officially confirmed whether the meeting scheduled for 9am at The Centre in Newlyn on August 3 will go ahead as planned.

In the controversial vote, Nick Howell, John Lambourn and Juliet Taylor were sacked from the board, and a fourth commissioner, Dave Munday, resigned the next day in protest.

But, in a further twist, Mr Howell and Mr Lambourn were both still listed as commissioners in the agenda for the postponed public meeting.

Controversy

Also up for discussion on Wednesday is likely to be the reappointment of Kevin Bennetts and Elizabeth Stevenson after their terms expired prior to the May 31 meeting.

There was no word from the commission on the three new appointments it had hoped to make this year; the closing date for applications was June 30.

Despite the controversy surrounding the commission, it appears to be progressing with plans to develop a marina at Sandy Cove.

Potential partner MDL Marinas is forging ahead with its proposals for Penlee Quarry.

The proposals include boat storage, a chandlery and engineering works to support the fishing fleet, plus strengthening works for the south pier.

Edward Iliffe, chief executive of Yattendon, MDL's parent company, confirmed that talks with the Cornwall Development Company, the economic development arm of Cornwall Council, which can bring £2.5 million in European funding to the scheme, are continuing.

The firm is currently working on a scoping report for the Mineral Planning Authorities before it submits a planning application.
