A super-pod of dolphins has been spotted in a four-mile feeding frenzy off the Cornish coast.

Around 1,000 common dolphins were seen yesterday off the clear waters of Mounts Bay in pursuit of bumper shoals of fish.

Hannah Jones from Marine Discovery, which runs wildlife watching trips around the coast of Cornwall, said it was "remarkable" to see so many together at one time.

She said: "I've never seen anything like it, there were hundreds of dolphins at a time and we just kept coming across them.

"Throughout the day we have been spotting groups of tens and hundreds and they just kept coming to form a super-pod of maybe 1,000 dolphins in all.

"It was incredible and beautiful to see, I think it's very rare to see so many, I never have before."

The main concentration has been in the Mounts Bay area from The Jubilee Pool at Penzance a short distance along the coast to Newlyn, past Lamorna and further out to sea.

They have gathered to feed off shoals of mackerel which have been attracted by the smaller fish feasting on plankton blooms in the warm weather.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust has warned sightseers to keep their distance from the rare sight after receiving a report of a boat harassing dolphins in the area on Sunday.
