YOUNGSTERS can learn practical sea safety tips on a free course being run during the summer holidays.

Teenagers aged between 14 and 16 who spend time on small fishing vessels can find out more about sea survival, first aid and fire prevention at the one-day sessions.

Run by Newlyn-based Seafood Cornwall Training in association with the Cornish Fish Producers' Organisation (CFPO) and Falfish, the practical training takes place on Tuesday, August 2, and the following day.

Sarah Crosbie, manager of Seafood Cornwall Training, said the safety days aimed to target the many young people from fishing communities who regularly headed out on the water without any safety training or knowledge of how to act in an emergency situation.

Among those sharing their wealth of knowledge will be Mike Collier MBE. He said: "This is a great opportunity for some of the kids already helping their dads or grandads in the fishing industry to be safer and become more aware of some of the dangers of being at sea."

Paul Trebilcock, chief executive of the CFPO, added that the fishing industry was in need of young blood.

"It is important that we encourage a culture of safety among fishermen from an early age," he said. "Hopefully this experience will instill in them an enthusiasm they will carry with them in their future careers."
