A GESTURE of solidarity between the Cornish and Breton fishing communities is being presented at a Celtic festival this weekend.
A miniature bronze sculpture of the Newlyn Fisherman Memorial will be handed to the Concarneau's Musee de la Peche during the town's annual Fête des Filets Bleus.
The original sculpture, depicting a young fisherman looking out to sea from Newlyn Green and commemorating the sacrifice of Cornish and Scillonian fishermen, was officially unveiled four years ago by Princess Anne after a £50,000 national campaign.
And the gift is the idea of its creator, Tom Leaper, who will travel across the Channel to make the presentation of a cast of the original maquette of the memorial in the company of Stephen Childs, who runs Steckfensters shop in Chapel Street and who is co-sponsoring the trip.
"We thought it would be a good idea to make some sort of hands-across-the-channel gesture because Penzance and Newlyn are twinned with Concarneau," Tom said.
"After all, Concarneau has lost some of its fishermen in the same way that Newlyn has – it is good to foster friendly relations between the two communities."
