EXPERIENCED fishermen who completed their mandatory basic safety training more than three years ago are entitled to free training.
The voluntary training course with Seafood Cornwall Training (SCT) will update skills in sea survival, firefighting, first aid and safety awareness.
Although it is not mandatory to update skills, Sarah Crosbie from SCT said that retraining is invaluable.
She said: "Inevitably, much of what was learnt before may have been forgotten and there have been significant changes in first aid practices and safety procedures.
"Apart from the obvious enhancement to safety skills, the certificates issued on first aid and sea survival courses will be recognised for use in other maritime industries.
"This will provide fishermen with the opportunity to capitalise on opportunities to supplement their fishing income, with income from other maritime work."
Elementary first aid courses will be held monthly in Newlyn from this Monday, sea survival from Tuesday, firefighting from Wednesday, and safety awareness on Friday, November 18.
Health and safety courses for new entrants are next Thursday only and cost £75.
