Second to row were the Ladies B with
Roseland and Mount's Bay again coming in first and second but this time
with Cadgwith in Buller finishing third. The under 16's rowed a
straight race back from the marks, into the stiff breeze. Three gigs
took part with Mount's Bay's crew in Taran recording their first win of
the year ahead of Cadgwith in Buller and Truro in Circe.
The
men's races continued the pattern of the ladies. In the A race 11 gigs
took part with Roseland winning ahead of Coverack in Lark with Mount's
Bay in Taran coming third. Roseland also won the Mens B race, with Par
in Phantom in second and Cadgwith in Buller third. The under 14's race
involved a shorter course back from Newlyn harbour. Five gigs took part
with victory going to Cape Cornwall in Brisons, Cadgwith in Buller came
second and Mount's Bay in Taran finished third.
The mixed race
involved seven gigs racing a straight course back from the marks.
Roseland continued their run of success, winning ahead of Mount's Bay
and Coverack who came second and third respectively. The final race,
the veterans also used the straight course. Finishing off a fantastic
day for their club Roseland's rowers in Killigerran were victorious
with the home club in Melusine second and Mount's Bay's men's veterans
crew rowing in Lyonnesse third.
Roseland dominated the day and
must be strong contenders for the County Championships at Newquay next
month. However the overall trophy went to local club Mount's Bay who
put in a strong overall performance in every race including the juniors.
In
other news, Zennor Gig Club (ZGC) took part in Fowey Gig Club's regatta
at the weekend entering a men's, ladies, mixed and veterans crew in the
club's second gig, Senara.
The gigs were launched next to the
Bodinnick ferry with racing beginning next to the lifeboat pontoon. A
good downpour later and the ladies crew took to the water. The ladies
put in a strong performance in the top heat to take sixth place overall.
The
men were next to row with an altered crew who had not previously rowed
together. Given these circumstances the crew members made a brave
attempt at the relatively long course and finished in 17th place
overall. The veterans crew were next to race in Senara. The crew rowed
extremely well together and managed to overtake two other crews on the
homeward leg finishing in fourth place.
The final race of the
day was the mixed race, a good decision by the ZGC cox around the first
mark saw the crew overtake Verbena of Appledore and finish in a
respectable seventh place.
The club will travel to Gorran Haven
on Saturday, Porthleven for the Across the Bay race on Sunday and will
take part in the gig race at the Newlyn Fish Festival on Bank Holiday
Monday in aid of the RNLI.
