A new addition to the Newlyn Trinity Methodist's Advent programme has been celebrated to coincide with the opening of their new building on Chywoone Hill.In addition to the traditional carol services and a candlelit service on Christmas Eve, for the first time Trinity members recently enjoyed an Advent spiral at the Centre.

Following a tradition, thought to have originated in Germany in the 4th century, evergreen branches were laid out in a spiral, at the centre of which was a large lit candle, representative of God's light in Christ.

Members of the congregation then walked with an unlit candle around the spiral, lighting it from the central candle.

Jeremy Drew from Newlyn Trinity Methodist explained: "At any point on your return journey, you place or 'plant' your light in the garden.

"Gradually the spiral becomes brighter and brighter," he continued.

"It is a beautiful ritual which small children particularly love.

"Such was the impact of this quite moving service it is hoped that the Advent spiral will become an annual event."
