Very encouraging progress is being maintained by the Newlyn local committee in their efforts to provide a memorial to fishermen lost at sea from Cornish and Isles of Scilly harbours."With the total now approaching £40,000, the most recent major donations have come from Mr James St Aubyn of St Michael's Mount, the Fishmongers Company in London - led by Cornishman Sir Richard Carew Pole - the Mousehole Male Voice Choir and Colonel Edward Bolitho of Trengwainton, Penzance", said chairman Douglas Williams.

Ahead lies the second annual Easter Sunday concert at St John's Hall, Penzance on April 8 at 7.45pm.

It will feature the Holman Climax Male Voice Choir, with guest soprano soloist Karen Hurn.

This is a joint charity venue with the John Daniel Centre Appeal.

Admission is £4 with tickets available from Barron's Newsagents, Newyln and Morrab Studio, Penzance or on the door of the hall on the night.

"Contracts have recently been exchanged with Cornish sculptor Tom Leaper for the life-size bronze statue," said Mr Williams. "Co-operation is continuing between the committee, Penwith and county councils on the strengthening of the proposed site at Tolcarne, Newlyn.

"There are hopes that the statue may be completed by the autumn.

"The fund-raising target is £50,000 and Cornish fishermen and artists have played a full role towards this."
