South West Water has confirmed there is sufficient capacity within the sewerage network to cope with the extra flows from the proposed marina development at Penlee Quarry.

The company said, however, that an investigation had revealed that the proposed lift bridge would require a redirection of the main sewer to Mousehole.

A company spokesperson said there was confidence that a satisfactory engineering solution could be found.

Andy England, chief planning officer at Penwith District Council, said the developer is responsible for costs incurred with connecting a housing development to a sewer.

Marina Development Ltd (MDL) wants to develop a glittering marina complex with a five star hotel and 200 apartments and houses.

A planning application is expected to be lodged in the near future.

Edward Illiffe, MDL's managing director, dismissed fears that were relayed in a recent letter to The Cornishman.

A correspondent suggested the marina plan was a "carrot" to develop the quarry for housing.

"We are a marina development company," he said.

"The housing is being done to fund the marina, not the other way around."
