The 37ft Cornish lugger, which has been recreating the journey of seven Cornishmen in 1854 relying on sail power and traditional methods of navigation, arrived at the city’s harbour on Monday morning.
The crew, which consisted of Pete Goss, his brother Andy, 42, and 14-year-old son Elliot, were greeted on their arrival by a local mayor and the president of the Cornish Association of Victoria.
However, the vessel was short of one crew member.
A few days earlier, the Spirit of Mystery had made a brief stop at Portland to disembark Pete Goss’s brother-in-law, Mark Maidment, who had broken his leg when a freak wave engulfed the boat last week.
Pete, who said he was now considering whether to return home on the Spirit of Mystery via Cape Horn, said: “Everyone is absolutely elated and there’s just this huge sense of achievement.
“It’s also been a lot of fun, and to have done it with my family has made it extra special – I can honestly say we didn’t have a cross word during the trip.
“I feel very privileged to have been able to do this.”
