A SHELLFISH merchant from Newlyn has invested £55,000 in upgrading its production equipment.

The project at W Harvey and Sons was part-funded by an interest-free loan from the PESCA Business Development Fund.

This followed an application made on the company's behalf by Winter Rule, Truro-based chartered accountants and business advisors.

Matthew Harvey from W Harvey and Sons, said: "At the end of last year we discovered that our Newlyn Coombe first floor factory was at serious risk of collapse and we needed to do something urgently in time for this year's season and we temporarily relocated our production facilities and shop.

"The PESCA loan meant we were able to secure additional bank finance to carry out all the work and thanks to the efforts of all involved we finished everything on time."

The business reopened its Newlyn Coombe Shellfish Shop last month, and has increased staff numbers to satisfy demand.

The PESCA Business Development Fund provides interest-free loans on a match funding basis to fish industry businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon and Dorset. The investment must relate to business start-up or growth.
