THE irreverent art of printmaker Trevor Price has graced the walls of Badcocks Gallery many times. It is, though, the first time that the Newlyn gallery has showcased the paintings of the Cornwall-born artist.

The primitive art-inspired figures of nude men and women frolicking together are as much a theme of Trevor's paintings as they are of his etchings.

The use of colour brings extra sense of dreaminess to the images, which have elements of the surreal.

In his painting The Storybook Couple, a man and woman lie in a big brass bed which is lifted aloft above a wide sea by balloons, while around them swoop flying fish.

In the Rainbow Shower, a perennial Trevor Price theme of a naked showering couple appears within an outdoor sunset scene, the pink light of the setting sun reflected on the calm water of a lake.

The Bathers is full of typical Trevor Price humour; with a the many limbs and stomachs poking from what looks like a hot tub, with candles all around it, and lush, tropical vegetation beyond that. Butterflies feature as well as birds in many of his paintings, adding to a sense of lushness and fecundity.

The artist, born in 1966, grew up in Cornwall and studied printmaking at Falmouth School of Art, then Winchester School of Art.

He went on to work in a London etching studio, learning the skills of professional printmaking through an old-fashioned apprenticeship.

On returning to Cornwall in his mid-20s, Trevor based himself in St Ives. With the artistic influences of St Ives, his work began to change and develop.

Trevor has now moved to London, but returns to St Ives as often as he can, where he is influenced both by the town's luminaries, such as the artist Ben Nicholson, and by the place itself.

Sea views from cottage bedrooms find their way into his work.

"Trevor's prints have delighted our clients for some years but we are thrilled to be showing his paintings for the first time at Badcocks," says Mimi Connell-Lay, the gallery's co-owner.

"His paintings are always full of life, love and humour."

Trevor's paintings are at Badcocks Gallery, Newlyn, until October 6. Visit www.badcocksgallery.co.uk or call 01736 366159.
