APPROPRIATELY enough, Newlyn's third arts festival opens with a bang on Thursday, November 5, with the start of no less than three exhibitions – an Open Art exhibition in Newlyn Art Gallery (10am to 5pm) runs until November 11, a Fish and Ships Exhibition in the Fisherman's Mission (9.30am to 4pm) and a Photography Exhibition in the Tolcarne Inn (6.30pm onwards) that run throughout the festival.

The Tolcarne Inn is also the venue on the following day, November 6, for a Literary Lunch, featuring local authors and storytellers Liz Harman and Randle Hurley (noon to 3pm) and again on November 8 when from 12.30 to 2.30pm when it plays host to a jazz session with Alan Thompson, and on November 11 when from 8 to 11pm it holds an Open Folk session.

For good measure the Tolcarne Inn is also acting as the box office for the play, Stalag Happy, being staged in St Peter's Hall at 7.30pm on November 7.

One of the festival's main attractions has to be its Open Studios event when, from 11am to 4pm on November 7 and 8, a lucky 13 members of Newlyn's current art colony throw open the doors of their studios to welcome visitors and to talk about their work.

At the Trewarveneth Street Studios there will be a chance to meet John Mitchell, Jason Walker, Rose Hilton and Paul Medley; at the Orchard Cottage Garden Studios, Bellevue, there will be Annie Metcalfe, Mark Nicholls, Maureen Semmons, Ray MacInnes and Penny Gray; at 10, Barlandhu, The Coombe, Jim Whitlolck; at 36a, The Strand, Susannah Clemence; at Fradgan House, The Fradgan, Diana Dixon and at 49, New Road, Joy Batten.

A festival which aims to cater for all tastes, on November 7 (7.30 to 10pm) there is a performance by the Reggae Band in The Centre, on November 10 (7 to 8.30pm) there is a poetry evening in Newlyn Art Gallery, on November 12 (9.30am to 3pm) in the Fisherman's Mission, there is a Knit In, a chance to knit squares for a blanket, in aid of the Precious Lives Appeal, on November 13 (8 to 11pm) in the Dolphin Inn, Jack Lane, there is a '70s Disco – retro dress a must and on the festival's final day, November 14, from 9.30am to 3.30pm there is an Arts and Crafts Fair in the Centre, and later that day, in St Peters' Hall (7 to 10pm) there is Aunt May's pasty supper, featuring the Newlyn Reelers and the Braga Tanga Band.
